What inspired you: When kids in the foster care system 'age out' of the system at 18, they don't have a safety net. I am about to turn 18 and wanted to reach out to kids who didn't have a parent to help guide them through this important transition. United Friends of the Children, a non-profit located in LA, has a transitional housing program called Pathways that houses over 35 emancipated foster youth and teaches them life skills, like any family would. I used my TGO money to purchase gardening equipment for an Edible Garden, inspired by Michelle Obama's garden at the White House. The garden teaches the residents to eat more healthily, as well as gives the community a project that brings them all together.

What I learned: Growing vegetables seems like a simple thing, but it is hard work and takes regular work that is often mundane. But picking the vegetables off the vine is like nothing else in the world and can inspire a person to eat more healthily and want to go into the kitchen!
